Sir James Dick of Prestonfield, 1st Bt.1

     Sir James Dick of Prestonfield, 1st Bt. was born circa 1644.2 He was the son of Alexander Dick and Helen Rochead.3 He married Anne Paterson, daughter of William Paterson.3 He died on 15 November 1728 at Prestonfield, Midlothian, Scotland, without male issue.1,2
     He was a merchant at Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.3 He was created 1st Baronet Dick, of Prestonfield, co. Midlothian [Scotland] on 2 March 1677.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Edinburgh [Scotland] from 1681 to 1682.3 In 1682 he was one of the few saved in the wreck of the frigate Gloucester on the way from London.3 He held the office of Lord Provost of Edinburgh from 1682 to 1683.3 He purchased Prestonfield before 1687.3 He was created 1st Baronet Dick, of Prestonfield, co. Midlothian [Scotland] on 22 March 1707, with a special remainder to his grandson by his daughter Janet.1,2 On his death his baronetcy of 1677 became extinct.2
