He was educated at Bury Grammar School, Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, England.1 He was educated at Winchester College, Winchester, Hampshire, England.1 He graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, in 1812 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)1 He graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, in 1815 with a Master of Arts (M.A.)1 He was admitted to Lincoln's Inn in 1816 entitled to practise as a barrister.1 He was appointed Knight in 1825.1 He held the office of Recorder of Bury in 1832.1 He was appointed King's Counsel (K.C.) in 1832.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Liberal) for Penryn between 1832 and 1839.1 He held the office of Solicitor-General in 1834.1 He held the office of Solicitor-General between 1835 and 1839.1 He held the office of a Baron of the Exchequer between 1839 and 1850.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1850.1 He was Commissioner of the Great Seal between June 1850 and July 1850.1 He was created 1st Baron Cranworth, of Cranworth, co. Norfolk [U.K.] on 20 December 1850.1 He held the office of Lord Justice of Appeal in 1851.1 He held the office of Lord Chancellor between 1852 and 1858.1 He held the office of Lord Chancellor between 1865 and 1866.1
