William Orlando Markham was born on 28 January 1818.1 He was the son of Charles Markham and Eliza Mary Packharness.2 He married, firstly, Eliza Emma Smith, daughter of John William Smith, on 29 April 1847.1 He married, secondly, Catharine Hamilton, daughter of Professor James Hamilton, on 21 September 1854.1 He died on 23 January 1891 at age 72.1
He graduated from Edinburgh University, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland, with a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.)1 He was appointed Fellow, Royal College of Physicians, London (F.R.C.P.)1
