     He gained the rank of Colonel in the Somersetshire Light Infantry.¹ He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.)¹

     Catherine Penelope Maitland was the daughter of Lt.-Col. Frederick Thomas Maitland and Emily Augusta Mary Newlands.² She married Admiral William Henry Maxwell on 13 December 1871.¹ She died on 9 June 1910.¹
