He was educated at Uppingham School, Uppingham, Rutland, EnglandG.1 He gained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant on 1 August 1942 in the Black Watch and Parachute Regiment.1 He fought in the Second World War, when he was wounded and became a POW in 1944.3,2 He was awarded the Military Cross (M.C.) in 1945.1 He was with the Foreign Office in 1949.1
