     Lt.-Col. John Adrian Hope, 1st Baron Glendevon was born on 7 April 1912.3 He was the son of Victor Alexander John Hope, 2nd Marquess of Linlithgow and Doreen Maud Milner.3 He married Elizabeth Mary Maugham, daughter of William Somerset Maugham and Gwendolyn Maud Syrie Barnardo, on 21 July 1948.3 He died on 18 January 1995 at age 82.1
     He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, EnglandG.1 He graduated from Christ Church, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, in 1936 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)1 He fought in the Second World War, where he was mentioned in despatches.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Scots Guards.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) Linlithgow [U.K.] on 16 July 1964.1 He wrote the book Viceroy at Bay, published 1971.1 He was awarded the Emergency Reserve Decoration (E.R.D.) in 1988.1

     Elizabeth Mary Maugham was born on 1 September 1915 at Rome, Italy.2 She was the daughter of William Somerset Maugham and Gwendolyn Maud Syrie Barnardo.1 She married, firstly, Lt.-Col. Vincent Rudolph Paravicini, son of Charles Rudolf Paravicini and Elizabeth von Wattenwyl, on 20 July 1937.1 She and Lt.-Col. Vincent Rudolph Paravicini were divorced in 1948. She married, secondly, Lt.-Col. John Adrian Hope, 1st Baron Glendevon, son of Victor Alexander John Hope, 2nd Marquess of Linlithgow and Doreen Maud Milner, on 21 July 1948.3 She died on 27 December 1998 at age 83 at Hopetoun, Lothian, Scotland.2
     From 20 July 1937, her married name became Paravicini. Her married name became Hope. After her marriage, Elizabeth Mary Maugham was styled as Baroness Glendevon on 16 July 1964.

     William Somerset Maugham was born on 25 January 1874.1 He was the son of Robert Ormond Maugham and Edith Mary Snell.1 He married Gwendolyn Maud Syrie Barnardo, daughter of Dr. Thomas John Barnardo and Syrie Louise Elmslie, on 27 May 1917 at Jersey City, New Jersey, U.S.A.G.1 He and Gwendolyn Maud Syrie Barnardo were divorced in 1929.3 He died on 16 December 1965 at age 91.3
