He was appointed Knight in 1858.4 He was chief engineer of the Magnetic Telegraph Company in 1860.4 He was registered as a Member, Institution of Civil Engineers (M.I.C.E.) in 1862.4 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Greenwich between 1865 and 1868.4 He was president of the SOciety of Telegraph Engineers and Electricians between 1886 and 1887.4

Mary Stourton was born on 24 September 1925.2 She was the daughter of Major Hon. John Joseph Stourton and Kathleen Alice Gunther.1,2 She married Anthony Gerard Edward Noel, 5th Earl of Gainsborough, son of Arthur Edward Joseph Noel, 4th Earl of Gainsborough and Alice Mary Eyre, on 23 July 1947.1 She died on 30 December 2018 at age 93.3
