Sir Sydney Harold Gillett, 1st Bt.1

     Sir Sydney Harold Gillett, 1st Bt. was born on 27 November 1890.1 He was the son of William Henry Gillett and Amy Ford Little.2 He married Audrey Isabel Mark-Wardlaw, daughter of Captain Edgar Penrose Mark-Wardlaw, on 19 June 1919.1 He died on 21 September 1976 at age 85.1
     Sir Sydney Harold Gillett, 1st Bt. usually went by his middle name of Harold.1 He was educated at Marlborough College, Marlborough, Wiltshire, EnglandG.1 He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches.1 He was awarded the Military Cross (M.C.) in 1916.1 He was a consultant with Dixon, Wilson, Wilson, Tubbs and Gillett.1 He held the office of Alderman of London between 1948 and 1969.1 He was appointed Knight Bachelor in 1953.1 He was appointed Fellow, Institute of Chartered Accountants (F.C.A.)1 He held the office of Lord Mayor of London between 1958 and 1959.1 He was created 1st Baronet Gillett, of Bassishaw Ward, City of London [U.K.] on 4 December 1959.1 He was appointed Knight, Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem (K.St.J.)1

     Sir Robin Danvers Penrose Gillett, 2nd Bt. was born on 9 November 1925.1 He was the son of Sir Sydney Harold Gillett, 1st Bt. and Audrey Isabel Mark-Wardlaw.2 He married, firstly, Elizabeth Marion Grace Findlay, daughter of John Findlay, on 22 September 1950.1 He married, secondly, Alwynne Winifred Hay, daughter of James MacDonald Hay, on 8 July 2000.1 He died on 21 April 2009 at age 83.3
     He was educated at Hill Crest Prepartory School, Erinton-on-Sea, EnglandG.1 He was educated at Pangbourne Nautical College, Pangbourne, Berkshire, EnglandG.1 He was with Canadian Pacific Steamships between 1943 and 1960.1 He was registered as a Master Mariner in 1951.1 He was awarded the Reserve Decoration (R.D.) in 1965.1 He was a director of Bevington Vaizey & Foster, Wigham Poland Home and Wigham Poland Management between 1965 and 1986.1 He held the office of Alderman of London in 1969.1 He gained the rank of Honorary Commodore in 1972 in the Royal Navy Reserve.1 He was appointed Knight, Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem (K.St.J.) in 1973.1 He was awarded the Officer, Order of Leopard of Zaire in 1974.1 He was awarded the Commander, Order of Dannebrog in 1974.1 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of the British Empire (G.B.E.) in 1976.1 He held the office of Lord Mayor of London between 1976 and 1977.1 He succeeded as the 2nd Baronet Gillett, of Bassishaw Ward, City of London [U.K., 1959] on 21 September 1976.1 He held the office of Elder Brother of Trinity House in 1978.1 He held the office of Gentleman Usher of the Purple Rod between 1985 and 2000.1 He was chairman of St. Katherine Haven between 1990 and 1993.2 He wrote the book A Fish Out of Water, autobiography.1 He lived in 2003 at 4 Fairholt Street, London, EnglandG.1
