     John William Morton Mansel was born on 2 August 1909.¹ He was the son of Algernon Lascelles Mansel and Isita Rodger Wilson.² He married Gillian Valerie Whinney, daughter of Douglas Harold Whinney, on 3 May 1952.¹ He died on 29 July 1974 at age 64.¹
     He was educated at Winchester College, Winchester, Hampshire, England^G.¹ He fought in the Second World War, where he was mentioned in despatches and became a POW.² He was awarded the Territorial Decoration (T.D.)¹ He gained the rank of Major in the 5th Battalion, The Queen's Royal Regiment (Territorial Army.)¹ He was appointed Fellow, Royal Institute of British Architects (F.R.I.B.A.)¹
