     He was educated at Downside School, Bath, Somerset, EnglandG.1 He was educated at Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, Berkshire, EnglandG.1 He gained the rank of Captain in the 9th/12th Royal Lancers.1

     He fought in the Boer War.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Coldstream Guards.1
