John Browne, 1st Earl of Altamont was born circa 1709.1 He was the son of Peter Browne and Mary Daly.1 He married Anne Gore, daughter of Sir Arthur Gore, 2nd Bt. and Elizabeth Annesley, in December 1729.1 He died on 4 July 1776.1 He was buried on 7 July 1776 at Westport, County Mayo, IrelandG.1 His will was proven (by probate) in 1776, in Prerogative Court, Dublin.1
He matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, on 17 July 1725.1 He held the office of Sheriff of County Mayo in 1731.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Castlebar between 1744 and 1760.1 He held the office of Governor of County Mayo.1 He was created 1st Baron Mount Eagle, of Westport, co. Mayo [Ireland] on 10 September 1760.1 He was created 1st Viscount Westport, of Westport, co. Mayo [Ireland] on 24 August 1768.1 He was created 1st Earl of Altamont, co.
