Penelope Madan was the daughter of Colonel Martin Madan and Judith Cowper. She married Hon. Sir Alexander Maitland, 1st Bt., son of Charles Maitland, 6th Earl of Lauderdale and Lady Elizabeth Ogilvy, on 6 July 1754.1 She died on 22 December 1805.1

Sir Alexander Charles Maitland, 2nd Bt. was born on 21 August 1755.1 He was the son of Hon. Sir Alexander Maitland, 1st Bt. and Penelope Madan.2 He married Helen Gibson-Wright, daughter of Alexander Gibson-Wright of Cliftonhall and Kersie and Margaret Gibson, on 30 April 1785.2 He died on 7 February 1848 at age 92.1
He succeeded as the 2nd Baronet Maitland, of Clifton, Midlothian [U.K., 1818] on 14 February 1820.1
