He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, EnglandG.1 He matriculated at Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, EnglandG, in 1797.1 He graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, EnglandG, in 1801 with a Master of Arts (M.A.)1 He was appointed Fellow, Society of Antiquaries (F.S.A.) on 7 May 1801.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Tory) for Clitheroe between 1802 and 1807.1 He was appointed Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.) on 2 May 1805.1 He succeeded as the 2nd Baron Brownlow of Belton, co. Lincoln [G.B., 1776] on 25 December 1807.1 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Lincolnshire between 1809 and 1852.1 He was created 1st Viscount Alford of Alford, co. Lincoln [U.K.] on 17 November 1815.1 He was created 1st Earl Brownlow [U.K.] on 17 November 1815.1 He held the office of Recorder of Boston in 1820.1 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Hanoverian Order (G.C.H.) in 1834.1 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Laws (D.C.L.) by Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, on 10 June 1834.1 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Law (LL.D.) by Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, EnglandG, on 6 July 1835.1 He held the office of President of the Royal Archaeological Society between 1841 and 1849.1
