William Smoult Playfair was born on 27 July 1836.1 He was the son of George Playfair and Janet Ross.1 He married Emily Kitson, daughter of James Kitson and Anne Newton, on 26 April 1864.1 He died on 13 August 1903 at age 67.1
He graduated from University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, Midlothian, ScotlandG, in 1856 with a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.)1 He was Professor of Medicine between 1858 and 1860 at Calcutta Medical College, Calcutta, IndiaG.1 He was registered as a Member, Royal College of Physicians, London (M.R.C.P.) in 1863.1 He was appointed Fellow, Royal College of Physicians, London (F.R.C.P.) in 1870.1 He was obstretic physician between 1872 and 1898 at King's College Hospital, London, EnglandG.1 He was Professor of Obstretic Medicine between 1872 and 1898 at King's College London, London, EnglandG.1 He wrote the book Science and Practice of Midwifery, published 1876.1 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Law (LL.D.) by St. Andrews University, St. Andrews, Fife, ScotlandG, in 1885.1 He wrote the book System of Gynaecology, published 1896, with Sir T.
