Mortimer Sackville-West, 1st Baron Sackville of Knole was born on 22 September 1820.2 He is the son of George John Sackville-West, 5th Earl De La Warr and Elizabeth Sackville-West, Baroness Buckhurst of Buckhurst.1 He married, secondly, Elizabeth Faber, daughter of Charles Wilson Faber and Mary Beckett-Denison, on 12 June 1873.2 He married, firstly, Fanny Charlotte Dickson, daughter of Maj.-Gen. William Dickson, on 14 January 1847.2 He died on 1 October 1888 at age 68.2
He was given the name of Mortimer West at birth.2 In 1873 he unsuccessfully claimed the Barony of Buckhurst of Buckhurst created for his mother when his elder brother, who had succeeded their mother as 2nd Baron Buckhurst of Buckhurst, inherited the Earldom of De La Warr.2 The special ‘jumping' remainder in the patent of creation was ajudged invalid but a like clause in the deed governing the inheritance of the Knole and other Sackville estates was ruled sound and he inherited them accordingly.2 He was created 1st Baron Sackville of Knole, co. Kent [U.K.] on 2 October 1876, with special remainder to his brothers.2

Dorothy Heseltine was the daughter of John Postle Heseltine.1 She married, firstly, Lionel Charles Cranfield Sackville, Viscount Cantelupe, son of Reginald Windsor Sackville, 7th Earl De La Warr and Hon. Constance Mary Elizabeth Cochrane-Wishart-Baillie, on 24 June 1890.1 She married, secondly, General George Darell Jeffreys, 1st Baron Jeffreys, son of Rt. Hon. Arthur Frederick Jeffreys and Amy Constantia Fenwick, on 28 February 1905.1 She died on 21 May 1953.1
