Mary, Lady Argyll
by William Aikman 2
by William Aikman 2
She held the office of Maid of Honour to the Princess of Wales before 1720.3 Her married name became Campbell. She held the office of Keeper of the Palace of Somerset House, in the Strand.3
The poet Gay calls her "smiling Mary, soft and fair as dawn." Horace Walpole writes "her face and person were charming; lively she was, almost to étourderie, and so agreeable that I never heard her mentioned afterwards by one of her contemporaries, who did not prefer as the most perfect creature they ever knew."3
