John Elphinstone, 4th Lord Balmerinoch was born on 26 December 1652 at Edinburgh, Midlothian, ScotlandG.1 He was the son of John Elphinstone, 3rd Lord Balmerinoch and Lady Margaret Campbell.2 He married, firstly, Lady Christiana Montgomerie, daughter of Hugh Montgomerie, 7th Earl of Eglinton and Lady Mary Leslie, on 15 February 1671/72 at Holyrood House, Edinburgh, Midlothian, ScotlandG.3 He married, secondly, Anne Rose, daughter of Most Rev. Arthur Rose and Barbara Barclay, on 12 June 1687 at Edinburgh, Midlothian, ScotlandG.1,3 He died on 13 May 1736 at age 83 at Leith, ScotlandG.1 He was buried on 17 May 1736 at Restalrig, Midlothian, ScotlandG.1
He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.)
