John Elphinstone, 4th Lord Balmerinoch1

     John Elphinstone, 4th Lord Balmerinoch was born on 26 December 1652 at Edinburgh, Midlothian, ScotlandG.1 He was the son of John Elphinstone, 3rd Lord Balmerinoch and Lady Margaret Campbell.2 He married, firstly, Lady Christiana Montgomerie, daughter of Hugh Montgomerie, 7th Earl of Eglinton and Lady Mary Leslie, on 15 February 1671/72 at Holyrood House, Edinburgh, Midlothian, ScotlandG.3 He married, secondly, Anne Rose, daughter of Most Rev. Arthur Rose and Barbara Barclay, on 12 June 1687 at Edinburgh, Midlothian, ScotlandG.1,3 He died on 13 May 1736 at age 83 at Leith, ScotlandG.1 He was buried on 17 May 1736 at Restalrig, Midlothian, ScotlandG.1
     He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Scotland] on 16 August 1687.1 He succeeded as the 4th Lord Balmerinoch [S., 1606] on 10 June 1704.1 He succeeded as the 3rd Lord Coupar [S., 1607] on 10 June 1704.4 He held the office of Sheriff of County Edinburgh in 1710.1 He held the office of Governor of the Mint in 1710.1 He held the office of a Representative Peer [Scotland] (Tory) in 1710.1 He held the office of a Commissioner of the Office of Lord Chamberlain in 1711.1 He held the office of a Representative Peer [Scotland] (Tory) in 1713.1

     Lady Eleanor Montgomerie was the daughter of Hugh Montgomerie, 7th Earl of Eglinton and Lady Mary Leslie.1 She married David Dunbar of Baldoon, son of Sir David Dunbar of Baldoon, 1st Bt. and Elizabeth McCulloch, in 1674.1 She died in September 1687.
     From 1674, her married name became Dunbar.1

     Lady Mary Montgomerie was the daughter of Alexander Montgomerie, 8th Earl of Eglinton and Lady Elizabeth Crichton.1 A contract for the marriage of Lady Mary Montgomerie and Sir James Agnew of Lochnaw, 4th Bt. was signed on 22 June 1683.1 She died in April 1742.1 She was buried at Holyrood Abbey, Edinburgh, Midlothian, ScotlandG.1
     Her married name became Agnew.

     Sir James Agnew of Lochnaw, 4th Bt. was born before 1660.1 He was the son of Sir Andrew Agnew of Lochnaw, 3rd Bt. and Jane Hay.1 A contract for the marriage of Sir James Agnew of Lochnaw, 4th Bt. and Lady Mary Montgomerie was signed on 22 June 1683.1 He died on 9 March 1735 at Edinburgh, Midlothian, ScotlandG.1 He was buried at Holyrood Abbey, Edinburgh, Midlothian, ScotlandG.1
     He held the office of Hereditary Sheriff of Galloway between 1702 and 1724, 11th.1 He succeeded as the 4th Baronet Agnew, of Lochnaw, co. Wigtown [N.S., 1629] in June 1702.1 In 1708 he sold his Irish estates to his agent, Patrick Agnew.1

     Katherine St. Quintin was born circa 1607.1,2 She was the daughter of Sir William St. Quintin, 1st Bt. and Mary Lacy. She married, secondly, Henry Sandys.3 She married Michael Wentworth, son of Sir George Wentworth and Hon. Anne Fairfax, before 1660.4 She married, firstly, Sir John Kaye, 1st Bt., son of Sir John Kaye and Anne Ferne, on 12 February 1660.3 She married, thirdly, Alexander Montgomerie, 8th Earl of Eglinton, son of Hugh Montgomerie, 7th Earl of Eglinton and Lady Mary Leslie, on 6 December 1698.3 She died circa July 1700.3 She was buried on 6 August 1700.1
     Her married name became Sandys.3 From 12 February 1660, her married name became Kaye.3 From 6 December 1698, her married name became Montgomerie. After her marriage, Katherine St. Quintin was styled as Countess of Eglinton on 6 December 1698.
