He was educated at Winchester College, Winchester, Hampshire, EnglandG.3 He was educated at Balliol College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG.3 He succeeded as the 3rd Baronet Grey, of Fallodon [U.K., 1814] on 9 September 1882.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Northumberland, Berwick Division between 1885 and 1916.1 He held the office of Under-Secretary, Foreign Affairs between 1892 and 1895.3 He wrote the book Fly-Fishing, published 1899 (ASIN: B00631A0QE.)3 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1902.1 He held the office of Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs between 1905 and 1916.1 He was appointed Knight, Order of the Garter (K.G.) in 1912.1 He gained the title of 1st Viscount Grey of Fallodon, co. Northumberland [U.K.] on 27 July 1916.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.)3 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.)3 On his death, his viscountcy became extinct.1

Grace Thornhurst is the daughter of Sir William Thornhurst and unknown Howard.1 She married Mildmay Fane, 2nd Earl of Westmorland, son of Francis Fane, 1st Earl of Westmorland and Mary Mildmay, on 6 July 1626.1
From 6 July 1626, her married name became Fane. After her marriage, Grace Thornhurst was styled as Countess of Westmorland on 23 March 1628.
