Simon Preston of Craigmillar was born circa 1514.2 He married Janet Bethune, daughter of Sir John Bethune, 2nd of Creich and Janet Hay, in 1540.1 He and Janet Bethune were divorced before 1544.1 He married Elizabeth Menteith, daughter of Sir William Menteith, 6th of Kerse, circa 1550.2 He died in 1569.2

Mary Ker was the daughter of Sir William Ker of Cessford and Janet Douglas.1 She married Sir Walter Scott, 1st Lord Scott of Buccleuch, son of Sir Walter Scott, 4th of Buccleuch and Lady Margaret Douglas, circa 1 October 1586, with a tocher of 10,000 marks Scots.1 She died after 1611.1

Robert Ker, 1st Earl of Roxburghe was the son of Sir William Ker of Cessford and Janet Douglas.2,3 He married, thirdly, Lady Isabel Douglas, daughter of William Douglas, 7th Earl of Morton and Lady Anne Keith.4 He married, firstly, Margaret Maitland, daughter of William Maitland of Lethington and Mary Fleming, on 5 December 1587.3 He married, secondly, Jane Drummond, daughter of Patrick Drummond, 3rd Lord Drummond and Lady Elizabeth Lindsay, on 10 January 1614.3 He died on 18 January 1649/50.3
In 1590 he brought about the murder of his cousin, William Ker of Ancram and Woodheid, foe which his possessions were seized and he was forced to leave the country.3 He was appointed Knight in 1590.3 In 1591 he was pardoned.3 He held the office of Warden Depute of the Middle March in 1593.3 He succeeded as the 1st Lord Roxburghe [Scotland] on 16 November 1600.3 He was Commissioner of the Scottish Exchequer in 1610.3 He was created 1st Lord Ker of Cessford and Caverton [Scotland] on 18 September 1616, with special remainder to his heirs male.3 He was created 1st Earl of Roxburghe [Scotland] on 18 September 1616, with special remainder to his heirs male.3 He held the office of Lord Privy Seal [Scotland] between February 1637 and 1648/49.4 On 31 July 1646 he obtained a regrant of his titles and estates to the heirs male of his body, and whom failing, to any heirs he might nominate.3 On 23 February 1647/48 he nominated as his heir (a) his grandson Sir William Drummond and his issue in tail male; (b) the three successive younger sons of his grandaughter Jean and their heirs male, provided the heir succeding should marry the eldest daughter of his son Harry, Lord Ker; (c) the daughters of Harry, Lord Ker by primogeniture; and (d) his own heirs male whatsoever.3 He held the office of Lord Privy Seal [Scotland] before January 1649/50.4

Alexander Montgomerie, 6th Earl of Eglinton was born in 1588.1 He was the son of Robert Seton, 1st Earl of Winton and Lady Margaret Montgomerie.1,2 He married, firstly, Lady Anne Livingstone, daughter of Alexander Livingstone, 1st Earl of Linlithgow and Lady Helen Hay, on 22 June 1612.1 He married, secondly, Margaret Scott, daughter of Sir Walter Scott, 1st Lord Scott of Buccleuch and Mary Ker, between November 1642 and March 1644.2 He died on 7 January 1661.
He was given the name of Alexander Seton at birth.1 He gained the title of 6th Earl of Eglinton [S., 1507] on 4 September 1612.1 He succeeded as the 7th Lord Montgomerie [S., 1445] on 4 September 1612.1 On 24 March 1615 he resigned his titles, and had a regrant.1 He fought in the Battle of Marston Moor in 1644, for the Parliamentarians.1 He gained the rank of Captain in 1650 in the Horse Guards, for King Charles II.1 Between 1651 and 1660 he was imprisoned.1
