     William Richard Woods Ballard was born on 23 December 1933.2 He is the son of Lt.-Col. Basil Woods Ballard and Eileen Rose Molesworth.1 He married Marianne Jean Elspeth Arbuthnott, daughter of Lt.-Col. Hugh Arbuthnott and Jess Agnes Henderson, on 1 April 1967.1
     He was educated at Marlborough College, Marlborough, Wiltshire, England.2 He graduated from College of Aeronautics, Cranfield, Bedfordshire, England, in 1958 with a Master of Science (M.Sc.)2 He was registered as a Chartered Engineer (C.Eng.)2 He was registered as a Member, Institution of Mechanical Engineers (M.I.Mech.E.)2 He was registered as a Member, Royal Aeronautical Society (M.R.Ae.S.)2 He lived in 2003 at Olivers Cottage, 101 The Street, Capel St. Mary, Suffolk, EnglandG.2

     Thomas Hamilton, 1st Earl of Haddington was born in 1563.2 He was the son of Sir Thomas Hamilton, Lord Priestfield and Elizabeth Heriot.3 He married, firstly, Margaret Borthwick, daughter of James Borthwick of Newbyres, circa 1588.4 He married, secondly, Margaret Foulis, daughter of James Foulis of Colinton, between May 1597 and August 1597.4 He married, thirdly, Julian Kerr, daughter of Sir Thomas Kerr of Ferniehirst and Janet Kirkcaldy, circa 16 September 1613.2 He died on 29 May 1637.2
     He was educated at Edinburgh High School, Edinburgh, Midlothian, ScotlandG.4 He was educated at Paris University, Paris, FranceG.4 He was a practising Advocate in 1587.4 He held the office of Lord of Session between 1592 and 1626.4 He was styled as Lord Drumcairn between 1592 and 1626.4 He was a practising Commissioner of Treasurer in January 1595/96, known as one of the Octavians.4 He held the office of King's Advocate in January 1595/96.4 He was appointed Knight in 1603.4 He held the office of Lord Clerk of the Register in 1612.4 He held the office of Secretary of State for Scotland between 1612 and 1626.4 He was created 1st Lord Binning [Scotland] on 19 November 1613.5 He held the office of Lord President of the Court of Session between 1616 and 1626.4 He was created 1st Earl of Melrose, co. Roxburgh [Scotland] on 20 March 1619.5 He was created 1st Lord Byres and Binning [Scotland] on 20 March 1619.4 He held the office of Lord Privy Seal between 1627 and 1637.4 He was created 1st Earl of Haddington [Scotland] on 17 August 1627, with the precedency of 1619, when he exchanged his Earl of Melrose title for this one.5

Robert Melville, 2nd Lord Melville of Monymaill1

     Robert Melville, 2nd Lord Melville of Monymaill was the son of Robert Melville, 1st Lord Melviille of Monymaill and Catherine Adamson.1 He married by contract, firstly, Margaret Kerr, daughter of Sir Thomas Kerr of Ferniehirst and Janet Kirkcaldy, on 28 October 1584.1 He married Jean Hamilton, daughter of Gavin Hamilton, 7th of Raploch and Jean Dishington, before 24 February 1601.1 He died on 9 March 1635, without issue.1
     He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Scotland] in 1600.1 He gained the title of Lord Burntisland [Scottish Law Lord] in 1601.1 He held the office of Extra Lord of Session between 1601 and 1626.1 He was appointed Knight before 1621.1 He succeeded as the 2nd Lord Melville of Monymaill [S., 1616] in 1621.1 On 10 August 1627 he received a regrant of his title, with remainder to any of his heirs bearing the name Melville 'as it should please him to designate at any tie during his life and his assignees whatsoever.1'

     Sir Walter Scott, 1st Lord Scott of Buccleuch was born in 1565.1 He was the son of Sir Walter Scott, 4th of Buccleuch and Lady Margaret Douglas.1 He married Mary Ker, daughter of Sir William Ker of Cessford and Janet Douglas, circa 1 October 1586, with a tocher of 10,000 marks Scots.1 He died on 15 December 1611 at Branxholme, Roxburghshire, ScotlandG.1 He was buried at Hawick, Roxburghshire, ScotlandG.1
     He held the office of Warden of the West Marches in 1590.1,2 He was appointed Knight in 1590.1,2 In October 1597 he was surrendered to the English, after leading some border raids, including an attack on Carlisle Castle.1 On the accession of King James VI to the English throne, he distinguished himself in composing the border strife.1 He held the office of Keeper of Liddesdale.1 He fought in the War in the Netherlands, under Maurice, Prince of Orange.1 He was created 1st Lord Scott of Buccleuch [Scotland] on 18 March 1605/6.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Scotland] on 26 February 1610/11.1

     Margaret Scott was the daughter of Sir Walter Scott, 1st Lord Scott of Buccleuch and Mary Ker.1 She married, firstly, James Ross, 6th Lord Ross of Halkhead, son of Robert Ross, 5th Lord Ross of Halkhead and Jean Hamilton, in 1615.1 She married, secondly, Alexander Montgomerie, 6th Earl of Eglinton, son of Robert Seton, 1st Earl of Winton and Lady Margaret Montgomerie, between November 1642 and March 1644.1 She died on 5 October 1652.2
     Her married name became Ross. From between November 1642 and March 1644, her married name became Montgomerie.1 After her marriage, Margaret Scott was styled as Countess of Eglinton.

     Eileen Rose Molesworth was born on 30 June 1904.2 She is the daughter of Lt.-Col. Hugh Wilson Molesworth and Dora Hanbury Brown.1,3 She married Lt.-Col. Basil Woods Ballard, son of Frederick George Ballard, on 15 October 1931.2 She died in 1980.2
     From 15 October 1931, her married name became Woods Ballard.1

John Elphinstone, 2nd Lord Balmerinoch1

     John Elphinstone, 2nd Lord Balmerinoch was born before 1587. He was the son of Sir James Elphinstone, 1st Lord Balmerinoch and Sarah Monteith.2 A contract for the marriage of John Elphinstone, 2nd Lord Balmerinoch and Ann Kerr was signed on 30 August 1613.1 He died on 28 February 1648/49 at Edinburgh, Midlothian, ScotlandG, from apoplexy.1 He was buried on 1 March 1649 at Logan Cemetery, Restalrig.1
     On 4 August 1613 he was restored to the blood by Royal letters.1 He succeeded as the 2nd Lord Balmerinoch [S., 1606] on 4 August 1613.1 Between 3 December 1634 and 20 March 1635 he was tried and convicted for joining in 'the supplication', a petition to the Crown against grievances.1 He held the office of President of the Parliament [Scotland] in 1641.1 He held the office of Lord of Session between 1641 and 1649.1 In 1648 he was one of those who rescued the King from his imprisonment.1 He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.3
