Edward Arthur Alexander Shackleton, Baron Shackleton was born on 15 July 1911.2 He was the son of Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton and Emily Mary Dorman.3 He married Betty Muriel Marguerite Homan, daughter of Charles E. Homan, on 27 April 1938.4 He died on 22 February 1994 at age 82.1
He was educated at Radley College, Radley, Oxfordshire, England.4 He graduated from Magdalen College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, with a Master of Arts (M.A.)4 He fought in the Second World War between 1939 and 1945, where he was mentioned in dispatches twice.4 He was appointed Officer, Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) in 1945.4 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Preston between 1946 and 1950.4 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Preston South between 1950 and 1955.4 He was created Baron Shackleton, of Burley in the County of Hampshire [U.K. Life Peer] on 11 August 1958.1 He held the office of Minister of Defence for the Royal Air Force between 1964 and 1967.5 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1966.4 He held the office of Lord Privy Seal between January 1968 and April 1968.4 He held the office of Paymaster General between April 1968 and October 1968.4 He held the office of Lord Privy Seal in October 1968.4 He held the office of Minister in Charge of of Civil Services Department in October 1968.6 He wrote the book Arctic Journeys.4 He wrote the book Nansen the Explorer.4 He was appointed Knight, Order of the Garter (K.G.) in 1974.1
