     Virginia Hilda Brunette Maxwell Garnett, Baroness Bottomley of Nettlestone was born on 12 March 1948.1 She is the daughter of William John Poulton Maxwell Garnett and Barbara Rutherford-Smith.1 She married Sir Peter James Bottomley, son of Sir James Reginald Alfred Bottomley and Barbara Evelyn Vardon, in 1967.1
     From 1967, her married name became Bottomley.1 She held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Conservative) for Surrey South-West between 1984 and 2005.1 She held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.)1 She was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1992.1 She held the office of Secretary of State, Health between 1992 and 1995.1 She held the office of Secretary of State, National Heritage between 1995 and 1997.1 She was created Baroness Bottomley of Nettlestone, of St. Helens in the County of Isle of Wight [U.K. Life Peer] on 24 June 2005.1 She held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Surrey in 2006.3

     William John Poulton Maxwell Garnett was born on 6 August 1921 at London, England.2 He was the son of James Clerk Maxwell Garnett and Margaret Lucy Poulton.3 He married Barbara Rutherford-Smith, daughter of unknown Rutherford-Smith, in 1943.2 He and Barbara Rutherford-Smith were divorced in 1985.2 He married Dame Julia Cleverdon, daughter of Thomas Douglas James Cleverdon and Elinor Nest Lewis, in 1986.2 He died on 14 August 1997 at age 76 at Paros, Greece.2
     He lived at Horestone Point, Seaview, Isle of Wight, EnglandG.1 William John Poulton Maxwell Garnett usually went by his middle name of John.4 He was director of Industrial Society between 1962 and 1986.2 He was appointed Commander, Order of the British Empire (C.B.E.) in 1970.4
