Maria Young1

     Maria Young was born on 1 February 1861 at Pitcairn IslandG.1 She was the daughter of William Mayhew Young and Margaret Christian.2 She married Charles Edwards.1 She died on 13 October 1934 at age 73 at Nukualofa, TongaG.1 She was buried at Fasi Cemetery, Nukualofa, TongaG.1
     Her married name became Edwards.1 In 1881 she was engaged to a Christian, but it is not clear if she married him.1 She and Albert Knight were associated between 1881 and 1882 at Pitcairn IslandG.3 In 1890 she traveled to Tonga on the mission ship 'Pitcairn' after it visited Pitcairn Island. Maria served as the private nurse to Queen Salote of Tonga, and as midwife at the birth of all the royal princes and princesses.2

Albert Knight1

     In 1881 he arrived on Pitcairn, a victim of the shipwreck of the Acadia.2 Albert Knight and Maria Young were associated between 1881 and 1882 at Pitcairn IslandG.2 On 2 July 1882 he was removed from Pitcairn by H.M.S. Sapho. He was enamoured with Maria Young, who was already engaged to a Chriistian. As a result he was banished from the island, and a law was passed prohibiting the settlement of any further strnagers on the island.2

     He was educated at TongaG. He graduated from New ZealandG with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) He practiced law in New Zelaand, before returning to Tonga in 1974 and has been president of the
Tonga Law Society since 1993. At the time of his appointment, Edwards was
one of 61 candidates vying for 9 parliamentary seats in Tonga.2 He held the office of Minister of Police and Immigration [Tonga] on 12 January 1996.
