He was the son of David Carnegie, 3rd of Craigo and Margaret Dempster.² He married Mary Gardyne, daughter of James Gardyne, 2nd of Middleton and Mary Wallace, on 19 April 1775.² He died on 9 June 1793 at age 64 at Craigo, Angus, Scotland.
