     William Armstrong, Baron Armstrong of Sanderstead was born on 3 March 1915 at Clapton, London, EnglandG.1 He was the son of William Armstrong and Priscilla Hopkins.1 He married Gwendoline Enid Bennett, daughter of John Bennett, in 1942.1 He died on 12 July 1980 at age 65 at Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG.1
     He was educated at Bec School, Tooting, Surrey, EnglandG.1 He was educated at Exeter College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG.1 He was appointed Member, Royal Victorian Order (M.V.O.) in 1945.1 He was a civil servant.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.) in 1957.1 He held the office of Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1962.1 He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) in 1963.1 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of the Bath (G.C.B.)1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1973.1 He was created Baron Armstrong of Sanderstead, of the City of Westminster [U.K. Life Peer] on 29 January 1975.2 He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.1
