did they rebuilt it to roads? Did I understand it correctly?
@ Tatus - yes, mostly. The private tracks ran mostly between wide dual carriageway roads, so the trams only met other traffic at junctions, although here they had to force their way across through heavy traffic (and the Egyptian way of driving means that no one will ever give way unless you drive right across in front). Progress was very slow, not helped by rails in a bad condition. As soon as trams finished, roads were widened in many places to make even more room for cars. They saw this as progress :-(
