- Derwen College is a specialist college situated in Gobowen near Oswestry in Shropshire in the United Kingdom. The college provides further education (day and residential) for students with special educational needs and disabilities (a specialist SEN college). Derwen College works with young people (aged 16 to 25) with special educational needs and disabilities including: learning and physical disabilities, autism, behaviours of concern, and profound & multiple learning difficulties. Residential students learn on vocational pathways at Derwen College in Gobowen. Day students can also access pathways at Gobowen, as well as at sites in Ludlow, Telford and Walford, in Shropshire. The college is rated as 'Good' by Ofsted. Derwen Marketplace Visitors to Derwen can directly support students’ learning by visiting Derwen’s Marketplace in Gobowen. Students have work placements at Derwen’s Marketplace (in the restaurant, cafe, charity shop, hotel and garden centre). Work placements enable students to learn essential vocational skills for life including customer service, retail and hospitality skills. Derwen Marketplace is open daily. Awards Derwen College has received a number of awards including: 2022 Queen’s Award for Enterprise – Promoting Opportunity Natspec Award 2022 – Pathways into Employment Aico Awards 2022 – College Initiative of the Year (for the Vintage Advantage launch) 2021 NASEN (National Association for Special Educational Needs) Award – Best aged 16-25 provision in the UK. Awarded TES FE Awards Specialist provider of the year. Pearson Teaching Awards 2021 – Gold award for Steve Evans in Specialist Teacher of the Year category. Bronze award for Jessie Vaughan in the Digital Innovation category. History Derwen College was established in 1927 by Dame Agnes Hunt, who also founded the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopeadic Hospital, in Gobowen, Oswestry. (en)
