Lee, A New Data Set of Educational Attainment in the World, 1950â2010, NBER 5 Our model predicts the observation that during the 1990s a growing discrepancy in years of schooling and educational attainment would accompany the observed increasing difference in work hours. Recent data show this prediction to be controversial because differences in years of schooling years have shrunk, in particular between Germany and the U.S. According to Barro and Lee [2], years of schooling in Germany, Italy, France and US were, respectively, 8.0, 7.6, 7.5 and 12.1 in 1990, 10, 8.6, 9.6 and 12.7 in 2000, and 11.8, 9.6, 10.5 and 12.2 in 2010.
