How many displays can be connected to MacBook Pro

The number of external displays you can use at the same time depends on your Mac model and the resolution and refresh rate of each display.

Using a hub or daisy-chaining displays doesn’t increase the maximum number of displays you can connect. Connect the display with the highest resolution first.

MacBook Pro with M4 chip or M4 Pro chip

MacBook Pro models introduced in 2024 with the M4 chip or M4 Pro chip support up to three external displays simultaneously, based on the resolution (up to 8K) and refresh rate (up to 240 Hz) of each external display.

One external display

Supports one display in this configuration:

  • One display up to 8K at 60 Hz (or 4K at 240 Hz) over Thunderbolt or HDMI

Two external displays

Supports two displays in any one of these configurations:

  • Two displays up to 6K at 60 Hz (or 4K at 144 Hz) over Thunderbolt

  • One display up to 6K at 60 Hz (or 4K at 144 Hz) over Thunderbolt, and one display up to 4K at 144 Hz over HDMI

Three external displays

Supports three displays in this configuration:

  • Two displays up to 6K at 60 Hz (or 4K at 144 Hz) over Thunderbolt, and one display up to 8K at 60 Hz (or 4K at 240 Hz) over HDMI

MacBook Pro with M4 Max chip

MacBook Pro models introduced in 2024 with the M4 Max chip support up to four external displays simultaneously, based on the resolution (up to 8K) and refresh rate (up to 240 Hz) of each external display.

One external display

Supports one external display in this configuration:

  • One display up to 8K at 60 Hz (or 4K at 240 Hz) over Thunderbolt or HDMI

Two external displays

Supports two external displays in any one of these configurations:

  • Two displays up to 8K at 60 Hz (or 4K at 240 Hz) over Thunderbolt

  • One display up to 8K at 60 Hz (or 4K at 240 Hz) over Thunderbolt, and one display up to 8K at 60 Hz (or 4K at 240 Hz) over HDMI

Three external displays

Supports three external displays in any one of these configurations:

  • Three displays up to 6K at 60 Hz (or 4K at 144 Hz) over Thunderbolt

  • Two displays up to 6K at 60 Hz (or 4K at 144 Hz) over Thunderbolt, and one display up to 8K at 60 Hz (or 4K at 240 Hz) over Thunderbolt or HDMI

  • One display up to 6K at 60 Hz (or 4K at 144 Hz) over Thunderbolt, one display up to 8K at 60 Hz (or 4K at 240 Hz) over Thunderbolt and one display up to 4K at 144 Hz over HDMI

Four external displays

Supports four external displays in any of these configurations:

  • Three displays up to 6K at 60 Hz (or 4K at 144 Hz) over Thunderbolt, and one display up to 4K at 144 Hz over HDMI

  • Four displays up to 6K at 60 Hz (or 4K at 144 Hz) over Thunderbolt (requires Thunderbolt dock with 2x display outputs or Thunderbolt display daisy chaining)

MacBook Pro with M3 chip

MacBook Pro models introduced in 2023 or later with the M3 chip support up to two external displays simultaneously with lid closed, based on the resolution (up to 6K) and refresh rate (up to 60 Hz) of each external display.

One external display

Supports one display in any one of these configurations:

  • One display up to 6K at 60 Hz over Thunderbolt

  • One display up to 4K at 144 Hz over HDMI

Two external displays

Supports two displays in any one of these configurations with the lid closed:

  • One display up to 6K at 60 Hz, and one display up to 5K at 60 Hz over Thunderbolt

  • One display up to 6K at 60 Hz over Thunderbolt, and one display up to 4K at 100 Hz over HDMI

MacBook Pro with M2 Pro or M3 Pro chip

MacBook Pro models introduced in 2023 or later with the M2 Pro or M3 Pro chip support up to two external displays simultaneously, based on the resolution (up to 8K) and refresh rate (up to 240 Hz) of each external display.
