Gear refers to three categories of wearable items that provide players in-battle abilities: headgear, clothing, and shoes. Gear can be acquired in shops, ordered from another player or SplatNet Gear Shops via Spyke or Murch, from amiibo, etc.

Ability

Main article: Gear ability

Each gear item has one primary ability (or main ability) and up to three secondary abilities (or sub ability).

Brand

Main article: Gear brand

Each gear item has one specific brand, most of which affect the chance rolling a secondary ability on that item if obtained via leveling the gear item or rerolling via Spyke and Murch.

Other properties

Each player can only own one gear item with the same name. In order to obtain a duplicate item, the owned item must be replaced.

Shops

The main way to buy gear is from gear shops. Gear from shops always have the default main ability and the default amount of all-empty sub ability slots, but they offer the lowest prices on gear items.

Shops sell gear for cash. On any given real-life day, a shop will have a selection of items for sale. The items available will be selected at random from the pool of items that the player is eligible to buy, which depends on the player's level. The items available in the shop cycle out at midnight according to the system clock (in Splatoon) or at midnight UTC (in Splatoon 2 and 3).

Whether the player can repurchase owned items differs by games.

• In Splatoon, owned items cannot be repurchased.
• In Splatoon 2, owned items can be repurchased only if it has a non-default ability i.e., generated by SplatNet Gear Shop.
• In Splatoon 3, any owned items can be repurchased. In addition to replacing the owned item, the player may instead upgrade the owned item's star power.

Ordering

From another player

While interacting with other players in hubs, the player can order gear items they wear. At daily reset, Spyke or Murch will have the next ordered item available for purchase.

Players can order up to three items this way, which are added in a queue, but only one order will be fulfilled each calendar day. The first item ordered will be the first order fulfilled. The items offered for purchase by Spyke or Murch may have less secondary abilities than the source item and the price depends on its star power and secondary abilities.

Catalog-exclusive gear items can only be ordered if the player has already owned them.

Most gear items from the following gear brands cannot be ordered:

• amiibo
• Cuttlegear (with exceptions: see below)
• Grizzco

The only exceptions are the four Cuttlegear clothing introduced in Splatoon 2 version 3.0.0, which appear in shops and can be ordered through Murch as standard gear:

SplatNet Gear Shop

SplatNet 2 and SplatNet 3 offer gear for use in Splatoon 2 and 3 respectively. All items from SplatNet Gear Shop have different primary abilities from their default ones (as obtained from in-game shops) and each gear item/primary ability combination rotate every two (SplatNet 2) or four (SplatNet 3) hours.

After ordering a SplatNet item, it must then be picked up and purchased from Murch or Spyke. Only up to one SplatNet item can be in Murch/Spyke's possession (shared betweeen both) at any time.

Promotional gear

Main article: Promotional gear

Promotional gear is gear released to promote various events and third party collaborations. Many cannot be ordered through Murch, and some are region locked to Japan.

Adjusting gear

Main article: Adjust Gear

The ability to adjust gear was introduced in Splatoon 3 in version 5.0.0, allowing the player to slightly alter the appearance of certain gear when worn.

Statistics

Main article: Gear statistics

• Both in Splatoon and Splatoon 2, over half the 1-star gear is clothing.
• In Splatoon, exactly half the clothing is 1-star.
• In Splatoon 2, there is only one fewer 2-star item than there are 1-star items (140 versus 141).
• In Splatoon 2, the most common primary ability on headgear is Special Saver (seven items), the most common primary ability on clothing is tied between Quick Super Jump and Thermal Ink (fifteen items each), and the most common primary ability on shoes is Bomb Defense Up DX (nine items).
• In Splatoon 3, the most common primary ability on headgear is tied between Opening Gambit and Sub Resistance Up (fifteen items), the most common primary ability on clothing is Ink Saver (Sub) (twenty-one items), and the most common primary ability on shoes is tied between Ink Resistance Up, Ink Saver (Sub), and Stealth Jump (fifteen items).
• For all the categories in Splatoon, there are at least three different abilities which are the most common for that category.
• In Splatoon, the gear brand that produces the most headgear is Forge (fourteen items), the brand that produces the most clothing are tied with Splash Mob and SquidForce (sixteen items each) and the brand that produces the most shoes is Krak-On (thirteen items).
• In Splatoon 2, the gear brand that produces the most headgear is Forge (eighteen items), the brand that produces the most clothing is Splash Mob (nineteen items) and the brand that produces the most shoes is Tentatek (nineteen items).
• In Splatoon 3, SquidForce produces both the most headgear and the most clothing (thirty-three headgear items and twenty-seven clothing items), and Tentatek produces the most shoes (thirty-two items).
• In Splatoon, five brands do not produce all three types of gear: Firefin, Forge, Skalop, SquidForce, and the real-world tie-in brand KOG. They all produce headgear and clothing but not shoes, with the exception of KOG, which only produces clothing.
  • In Splatoon 2, only one brand still has this distinction: Skalop.
  • In Splatoon 3, Forge and Skalop both have this distinction.
• In Splatoon, every piece of special promotional gear, except for the CoroCoro gear, is produced by a special brand (for instance, the SQUID GIRL Gear is produced by The SQUID GIRL).
  • In Splatoon 2 and Splatoon 3, this is not the case. Every piece of special promotional gear is produced by an existing brand that is not associated with special promotions, most commonly Forge, which produces eight pieces of promotional gear in-game.
• Of the 205 items appearing in Splatoon and Splatoon 2, twenty-six had their stars changed (eight headgear, twelve clothing, six shoes), all by one star. The Noise Cancelers, LE Soccer Cleats, Round-Collar Shirt, Purple Sea Slugs, Gold Hi-Horses, Trail Boots, Mawcasins, Skull Bandana, White Shirt and Octoleet Goggles had their stars increased, whilst the White Anchor Tee, Crazy Arrows, Soccer Headband, Navy Striped LS, Bike Helmet, Armor Helmet Replica, Armor Jacket Replica, Armor Boot Replicas, Layered Anchor LS, Striped Beanie, Choco Layered LS, Pilot Goggles, Baby-Jelly Shirt, Green Tee, Camo Mesh, and Layered Vector LS had their stars decreased.
• All gear that appears in both Splatoon and Splatoon 2 that had Bomb Range Up in Splatoon has Sub Power Up in Splatoon 2. The same is true for Defense Up and Bomb Defense Up DX, Cold Blooded and Main Power Up, and for Special Duration Up and Special Power Up.
• The Splatfest Tee is the only piece of gear that had an ability in Splatoon (Special Saver) that still exists in Splatoon 2 and Splatoon 3, yet had its ability changed (to Ability Doubler, which is unique to it).
• Of the other four primary abilities added to Splatoon 2, Thermal Ink appears only on gear that is new to Splatoon 2, while the other three (Drop Roller, Object Shredder, and Respawn Punisher (except Black Anchor Tee) appear only on new gear or gear that had Damage Up as its primary ability in Splatoon.

Renamed gear

Certain pieces of gear have been renamed between games. These pieces of gear are:

• The Legendary Cap from Splatoon was renamed to "Cap of Legend" from Splatoon 2 and onwards.
• The Octoling Goggles from Splatoon were renamed to "Octoleet Goggles" from Splatoon 2 and onwards.
• The Dots-On-Dots Shirt from Splatoon 2 was renamed to "Dots-on-Dots Shirt" in Splatoon 3.
• The Eggplant Mountain Coat from Splatoon 2 was renamed to "Lemon Mountain Coat" in Splatoon 3.
• The Front Zip Vest from Splatoon 2 was renamed to "Front-Zip Vest" in Splatoon 3.
• The Octoling Armor from Splatoon was renamed to "Octoleet Armor" in Splatoon 3.
• The Green Laceups from Splatoon 2 were renamed to "Green Lace-Ups" in Splatoon 3.
• The Mint Dakroniks from Splatoon 2 were renamed to "Cyan Dakroniks" in Splatoon 3.
• The Non-slip Senseis from Splatoon 2 were renamed to "Nonslip Senseis" in Splatoon 3.
• The Polka-dot Slip-Ons from Splatoon 2 were renamed to "Polka-Dot Slip-Ons" in Splatoon 3.
• The Punk Blacks from Splatoon 2 were renamed to "Punk Nights" in Splatoon 3.
• The Red-Mesh Sneakers from Splatoon 2 were renamed to "Orange-Mesh Sneakers" in Splatoon 3.
• The Soccer Cleats from Splatoon were renamed to "Soccer Shoes" from Splatoon 2 and onwards.
• The Strapping Reds from Splatoon were renamed to "Red 3-Straps" in Splatoon 3.
• The Strapping Whites from Splatoon were renamed to "White 3-Straps" in Splatoon 3.
• The Octoling Boots from Splatoon were renamed to "Octoleet Boots" in Splatoon 3.

Similarly, certain pieces of gear which drastically differed in appearance depending on the player's selected gender in Splatoon 2 had their gender-exclusive variations split into two separate unisex gear pieces in Splatoon 3. This resulted in slight naming adjustments for the affected gear:

• The Enchanted Robe was split into Enchanted Robe A and Enchanted Robe B.
• The Fringed Loafers were split into Base Fringed Loafers and Baggy-Sock Fringe Loafs.
• The Pearlescent Crown was split into Pearlescent Crown L and Pearlescent Crown S.
• The School Cardigan was split into School Cardigan A and School Cardigan B.
• The School Shoes were split into Base School Shoes and School Shoes + Hi Socks.
• The School Uniform was split into School Uniform A and School Uniform B.
• The Squinja Mask was split into Squinja Mask Mk I and Squinja Mask Mk II.

Missing gear from Splatoon 3

While most of the gear items from Splatoon and Splatoon 2 have returned in Splatoon 3, on top of all the new gear introduced in the latter game, there are a few exceptions which are all listed below.
