SAGE III

Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment III

active Mission

SAGE III is helping scientists monitor the recovery of stratospheric ozone, which protects the Earth by filtering out harmful solar radiation, after its predecessor helped confirm the danger of ozone-depleting chemicals. As part of a NASA Earth-observing program dating to 1979, SAGE III has also measured airborne particles in the stratosphere from volcanic eruptions and intense wildfires in Australia and California, and changes in stratospheric water vapor.
