Part of Smithsonian Institution, National Air and Space Museum is one of the largest aviation museums in the world. It has two locations. One is at National Mall downtown Washington D.C. where first gas balloon demonstration in U.S.A. took place in 1861. Although aircraft museum was located on the site since 1918, it was not until 1946 when president Truman officially established National Air Museum as a part of Smithsonian Institution.
The other location "Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center is at southeastern edge of Washington's Dulles International Airport and opened to public in December 2003. Steven F. Udvar-Hazy who sponsored the construction is co-founder of ILFC world's largest commercial aircraft lessor.
