Public airport located 24 km west of London. Until 2014, when surpassed by Dubai International, it was world's busiest airport in terms of international passenger traffic. It is Europe's busiest airport and in the top five busiest in the world. Airport is operated by Heathrow Airport LTD. Originally named Great West Aerodrome (Harmondsworth) when established by Fairey Aircraft Company. Re-named and officially opened to civil traffic 25 Mar 1946. Heathrow was a hamlet located roughly where T2 stands today. |
