Faculty of Law

Research

The research activity of the Faculty of Law of the Higher School of Economics is focused on the development of interdisciplinary and inter-institutional research, which deals with the issues of historical, theoretical and branch legal sciences. Therewith, the Faculty is guided by the Programme of HSE Development up to 2030 when organizing the scientific work. The Programme’s subject matter in the field of “Jurisprudence” is directed at solving the issues of legal regulation of modern post-industrial society.

In this regard, special attention within the research activity is given to the following priority areas:

  • new private law in the context of automation of production processes and transfer of main economic activities to sectors for services and intellectual products, as well as respective aggregation processes (“New Private Law”);

  • digitization of law, development of artificial legal intelligence, Big Data, e-commerce and the creation of Legal Tech industry ("Digital Law");

  • universalization of public law in light of a globalized economy and the heightened role of international law ("Global Law");

  • legal regulation of consumption in light of constant population growth, resource scarcity and environmental pollution ("Biolaw").




The international science and education center “UNESCO Chair of Copyright and Other Intellectual Property Rights” offers a multi-vector platform for the implementation of scientific projects and research.

The Doctoral School of Law plays an important role in the study of current issues of legal science. The School provides support to postgraduate students and creates a unique environment for the training of highly qualifies specialists in the field of legal sciences.

The Faculty of Law annually encourages the research activity of students through the NIRS competition. Since its creation in 2003, the competition has evolved into the largest research project and currently attracts the attention of young researchers not only from Russia, but also from neighboring countries.

To support scientific research and implement its results, the Faculty of Law cooperates with national and international agencies and foundations that hold competitions for fundamental and exploratory scientific research grants.

A promising direction for the development of scientific, educational and project work at the Faculty is the programs for attracting Russian and foreign postdocs.




In order to fulfil the scientific potential of students, the Faculty supports the activities of Project Groups, Research and Study Laboratories (NUL) or Research and Study Groups (NUG). Each organizational form is unique, and its scientific and educational work is built in accordance with the goals, objectives and methods of research projects.




Important tasks in the organization of the scientific life of the Faculty of Law are solved by the peer-reviews journal “Law. Journal of the Higher School of Economics”. The publication is included in the list of the Higher Attestation Commission of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia for the publication of the main scientific results of dissertations for the degrees of doctor and candidate of sciences in the field of “Jurisprudence”. In 2020, a new peer-reviewed journal “Legal Issues in the Digital Age”. was established on the basis of the Faculty. The publication is devoted to the study of the entire range of legal issues related to digitalization, artificial intelligence, digital economy, and the protection of personal data. The editorial board includes leading experts in digital law from Russia, India, the United States, Germany, and Norway.

International cooperation plays an important role in the Faculty. In order to develop international relations and consolidate leading positions in the world rankings, the research unit actively engages with leading foreign research institutes, organizes scientific events with the participation of world-class experts, and takes part in international conferences on current topics of the legal agenda.
