Lost on the trail, Bill is taken ill. Men worn out, provisions scanty, they are forced to leave Bill and push forward. Meanwhile, a rich strike has been made on one of the claims, a company negotiating for its purchase, when the exhausted prospectors arrive and tell Jim of his pal's sad fate. A few days later the big deal is closed, Jim taking possession of the whole fortune, leaves for the outside. Bill returns, visits the law office and is shown the proof of his friend's perfidy. He starts out for the home town of Jim. Calling at the Forster residence, is told that Jim is in Europe. He rides uptown, reaching a busy thoroughfare just as the Forster horses dash away. He hears someone say it is Nell Forster in the carriage, and for a moment hesitates, then at the risk of his own life, saves it. He is badly hurt, and Nell orders him taken to her home. By the time he is able to leave they are deeply in love with each other, both striving to hide it. Bill determines to let Jim go scott-free accordingly, when recovered sufficiently, he bids Nell farewell. Jim returns home and hears the news of her rescue and is staggered to learn that Bill is not dead. He notices her altered looks and depression and suspects the cause, which is ratified when he looks in the window and sees her kiss a note-book which he knows belongs to Bill. This calls to the front all the latent manhood in Jim Forster. He determines to follow him and make every reparation possible. He reaches the Wildem home just as Bill is bidding his mother and sisters goodbye ere making a fresh start for the gold fields. A reconciliation is effected and a happy lovers' reunion.
