Add `{{GENDER:|}}` to some localisation messages | mediawiki/extensions/DiscussionTools | master | +50 -50 |
You can use {{GENDER:|m|f|n}} markup, with empty first parameter (which refers to the user viewing the page), in this message. We haven't added the markup in every possible message in English, since it wasn't clear that it would be more helpful than confusing.
We're going to add the {{Gender|}} markup to all instances within DiscussionTools that already use it in translations.

[mediawiki/extensions/DiscussionTools@master] Add `{{GENDER:|}}` to some localisation messages
Previously discussed in T292636, T329584, change 627390. Although it's not necessary to use {{GENDER:|}} in the English message to enable its use in translations, this question keeps coming up, so I'm increasingly convinced that we should add it to make it obvious to translators. It is also recommended by https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Messages_API#…on_user_names_via_GENDER: "If it is likely that GENDER will be used in translations for languages with gender inflections, add it explicitly in the English language source message."
I wasn't sure where the markup should be placed in English. I had a look at existing uses: https://codesearch.wmcloud.org/search/?q=%5C%7B%5C%7BGENDER%3A%5C%7C&files=en.json. In most cases the markup is placed on the pronoun "you" (if it's used in the sentence) or on the verb, and only once per message, so I followed this convention. (Even though in translations, it can affect other parts of speech and entire phrases, but I think this is intended to make it less distracting for translators working in languages without gender distinctions.)
A quick search reveals that currently, translations of 41 messages use {{GENDER:|}} markup. I have added it to their English versions.

There are a few messages that currently do not use {{GENDER:|}} in any translation, but which are phrased in a very similar way to one of the above, so it seems likely to me that it could be used. I have added it to their English versions as well.
