Wikidata: revert the erasure of P91 (sexual orientation) AND add a source (newcomer friendly)
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

English
A mass erasure of P91 recently took place, effectively erasing the LGBTQ+ identity of the people it was present for. Many of these people are openly out, so there should be no problems finding references to add when reverting these edits.

A list has been made of the erased P91s.

The only rules:
1 .Add your name on the dashboard https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/courses/WM_LGBT/Queering_Wikimedia_Hackathon/home

  1. enter the correct sexual orientation and add a source (dont put it back if it is not sourced properly)
  2. Remove the name from the list .https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:WikiProject_LGBT/Unsourced_sexual_orientation
  3. .Add #wewillnothide in the edit summary before publishing (if you want)
  4. if sourced with (Google books or Amazon links add the items in the section book items to be created

We at Wiki LGBT+ have a comparable page for gender at https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:WikiProject_LGBT/gender

I am interested in setting up something similar to establish best practices for sexual orientation

There is a proposal for best practice in the talk page of P91. I do disagree with some part of it (mostly the part about how marrying someone of the same gender is not sufficient to establish "non heterosexuality"...).

It is indicated on wikidataxhat that a similar erasure took place in 2016. Would be great to have these deletion added on to the list as well

I'm adding 3 tables where it is easy to see what language versions the person has an article in. I think this should make it easier to check if the article already has references that can be used in Wikidata.

Could we use an etherpad-based list or similar? The Wikidata userpage takes a looonng time to load and even more to save, making edits prone to conflicts. You can avoid that by editing only a subsection but when you move Q items from a section to another (e.g. Google Books -sourcing) you must edit the whole page. I’m losing a lot of time making one edit per item to avoid edit conflicts.

I created a dashboard so we can have some stats:

https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/courses/WM_LGBT/Queering_Wikimedia_Hackathon?enroll=qbunxayj

Just so we can have a rough idea on how long it take to deal with the backlog

I created a framapad here https://mypads.framapad.org/mypads/?/mypads/group/queering-wikipedia-do2xa57j8/pad/view/queering-wikimedia-hackaton-0m5kh673a
But not sure what @Okhjon wants to do with it

I think the point was to have the list in an etherpad, where it's easier to avoid edit conflicts. The list also loads really slowly (I have a crappy internet connection).

For later on, quite a few of this user's edits are on the list since they were unsourced.

How did you solve this? Are you using an etherpad list somewhere?

I stopped doing this task altogether since it was too hard to use the Wikidata page.

Thanks, I’ll use the etherpad since it appears to have four editors on it while the framapad has only two (including me).

Hi! I miss the section of "Books" to be created that appeared on the original WD page...could you please add it to the Etherpad?

I had made some editions, with the hashtag, including the creation of Q elements for source editions. My counter is empty, though

Hello all,
I have a question about the hackathon showcase :) https://etherpad.wikimedia.org/p/wmhackshowcase2020
Who's going to present? (we can only allow one person)
You indicated that you don't want to be recorded: however, the situation changed a bit, as we will stream the whole thing directly online. Is it fine if you don't share your camera, only your screen, and your voice so you can present?
If not, you could also prepare a video that we would broadcast for you during the showcase.
Thanks for your understanding!

People decided that I should be the one going there, and yeah, I will hide my camera. I am working on the presentation right now, and going to get a 2nd laptop since mine is stuck with firefox on linux.

Hi, the Wikimedia Hackathon 2020 took place two months ago. Can you please provide an update on this task? If this task was worked on and finished, then please change the task status to resolved. If this task is still valid and should stay open, then please associate an active project tag to this task so this task can be found on an active project workboard. Thanks!

It's still ongoing, but I'm not sure what workboard to put it on.

Proposing to decline this task; as the Wikimedia-Hackathon-2020 is past, and as there is no other active project tag on this task.

Hey considering having another go at this during this week end's hackaton to finish the job started last year

https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Hackathon_2021/Schedule

the project page on wikidata is here https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:WikiProject_LGBT/Unsourced_sexual_orientation#Dead_people

Removing task assignee due to inactivity as this open task has been assigned for more than two years. See the email sent to the task assignee on August 22nd, 2022.
Please assign this task to yourself again if you still realistically [plan to] work on this task - it would be welcome!
If this task has been resolved in the meantime, or should not be worked on ("declined"), please update its task status via "Add Action… 🡒 Change Status".

This appears to be a past hackathon project that has now concluded, and as a goal outside the context of the hackathon (as it now is), it would be outside Phabricator's scope.
