The elections of trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation have been held regularly since 2004. The procedures for the elections are decided by the election officials. Recent elections were held in June 2013, in May 2015 and in June 2017.
The Election for Community Seats of the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees is an election in which Wikimedia community editors vote to appoint individuals to a 3-year term in 3 of 10 seats on the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees. Individual Wikimedia editors who meet certain criteria, including having a Wikimedia user account and meeting a minimum requirement for recent Wikimedia editing, are able to vote in the election. The election is significant for being among the highest profile, highest impact events for Wikimedia community participation in the governance of the Wikimedia Foundation and the Wikimedia Movement.
