User Story: Teaching with ISA Tool

edit

As Amari, the youth outreach specialist...

I want to train youth in using the ISA Tool to help add keyword metadata (depiction statements) to images within Wikimedia Commons categories during Wiki Loves Africa

So that participants are trained in media literacy skills, attain technical skills, and are empowered to contribute to open knowledge project.

User Scenario: Campaign creation, from training to tagging

Step Narrative Notes
1 Amari familiarizes themselves with the Wiki Loves Africa guidelines and starts to identify an area of focus. At the same time, they learn the ISA Tool and start to identify a Wikimedia Commons category for images that are friendly to teens for image tagging.
2 After investigating some categories that might be too hard because they require specialized knowledge, they settle on the category for "People at Work in Africa" which allows participants to select images for their particular country.
3 Amari creates a campaign in the ISA Tool as a "Wiki Loves" campaign, populating it with 18,000 images from the category for Wiki Loves Africa 2017.
4 Amari creates online training materials for participants, showing them how to visit the ISA Tool on their mobile phone. Users must create an account in order to participate, which is a bit complex as some IP addresses are blocked.

The two major contributions for participants are for depiction information, which can be selected from a controlled vocabulary of Wikidata items, and caption information where descriptive text can be entered.

5 During instruction, users are informed of some additional options: users are told they can skip images that they are unsure about. They can also remove any tags they deem inaccurate, or add additional languages based on their login profile.
6 Users can check their status on the leaderboard, encouraging them to compare their progress with others. This competitive angle resonates with many of the participants, so they can see their contributions add up.
7 Amari generates a report from the ISA Tool campaign page at the end to show their managers the outcomes of the event.

Phase Narrative Challenges Tools and links
Wiki Loves Africa training and prep Amari familiarizes themselves with the Wiki Loves Africa guidelines and starts to identify an area of focus. - Wiki Loves Tool gives a good summary but provides limited info about images and contributors, and is somewhat slow to operate. Wiki Loves tool - https://wikiloves.toolforge.org/africa/2017
ISA training and prep Learn the ISA Tool and start to identify a Wikimedia Commons category for images.

The Commons category "People at Work in Africa" is chosen

- Some types of images are more friendly to teens for image tagging, such as ones without requiring specialized knowledge. ISA Tool

Petscan - identifying and searching Commons categories

Training and signup Amari creates a training and edit-a-thon session planned for 3 hours on how to visit the ISA Tool on mobile phones. - Users must create an account in order to participate, which is a bit complex as some IP addresses are blocked.

- Assistance is needed from admins or bureaucrats, leading to some frustrated users.

ISA Tool

Commons:Volunteer_Response_Team requires an email to the VRTS system - request to unblock IP addresses

Metadata enrichment guidelines Participants add depiction information  and caption information where descriptive text can be entered. - Need to explain controlled vocabulary of Wikidata items to users for depiction fields, and not free-form text. Need to be careful of multiple matches, using description field to disambiguate.

- Training for caption writing is not trivial, with the existing instructions rather vague.

Feedback and Follow-up Amari generates a report from the ISA Tool campaign page at the end to show their managers the outcomes of the event. - Per-user, per-country, and session breakdowns are hard, as they are mixed in with general ISA Tool results.

Reports can be generated using - WikiCommons Query Service to analyze P180 statements, but requires authentication thereby limiting the ability to write scripts and tools.
