We're committed to working together with other standards development organizations to help health data move seamlessly when and where it's needed.

Since its inception LOINC has been built as an open standard, and Regenstrief is committed to working with others who have similar goals of building seamless networks of health systems and data that live up to the promise of optimal health for all. Here you'll find a brief description of our official collaborations with other SDOs.

HL7 Member

Health Level Seven (HL7)

In 1984 Clem McDonald, MD—the father of LOINC—began an effort that produced the first clinical message standard. This work became the Health Level Seven International (HL7) clinical result reporting standard that is now ubiquitous in healthcare systems around the world. Regenstrief investigators have participated in HL7 development since its inception. It was by design that LOINC fits perfectly as the vocabulary standard for observation identifiers in HL7 messages. In 2011, Regenstrief and HL7 signed a statement of understanding to enhance their long-standing relationship to develop complementary health data standards.

IEEE Standards Association

Regenstrief Institute and the IEEE Standards Association have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for collaboration in standards development. Regenstrief, developers of LOINC, and IEEE, developers of the 11073™ standards, are connecting standardized terminology and methods of data communication to enhance the interoperability of traditional medical devices and personal health devices. These standards facilitate communication between medical, health care and wellness devices and with external computer systems. By enabling interoperable data exchange, this work will support patients living independently with chronic diseases.

SNOMED International

SNOMED International

Regenstrief Institute and SNOMED International have formed a long-term collaborative relationship with the objective of developing coded content to support order entry and result reporting. The two organizations are building closer links between the SNOMED CT and LOINC terminologies, reducing duplication of effort, and making electronic health records more effective at improving health care. By aligning how the two terminologies represent the attributes of laboratory tests and some types of clinical measurements, this collaboration will provide users a common framework within which to use LOINC and SNOMED CT.

RSNA

Radiological Society of North America (RSNA)

Regenstrief Institute and the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) have formed a collaborative relationship to unify terms for radiology procedures. The Radiological Society of North America, owns and maintains the RadLex™ medical terminology for radiology, and the Regenstrief Institute Inc. owns and maintains the LOINC terminology standard for medical tests and measurements. Creating standardized radiology procedure names will improve the quality, consistency and interoperability of radiology test results in electronic medical record systems and health information exchange. The goal of the project is to produce a single unified source of names and codes for radiology procedures with a cooperative governance process.

Health Standards Collaborative (HSC)

The purpose of the Health Standards Collaborative (HSC, formerly SCO) is to provide an executive forum and process for senior leadership of the U.S. healthcare standards development community to have strategic and tactical dialogue, planning and action that improves health data interoperability.
