I think Joust assembled an army to counteract the threat of the SMB2 face. |

I found a hidden happy face in the Drakkhen ROM, stored at the end of the moon phase graphics:
There's also two frames of a running kitty in with the overworld sprite data: Edit: Correct palette for the kitty. It's a calico! (E: Made it bigger --X) |

The overworld graphics change for each of the four regions, but that cat is in the same spot for every location and looks the same, so it seems to me that it's just memory filler. Maybe one of the programmers really liked cats. |

I probably should have also noted that I have played through Drakkhen a few times and I've never seen it. If there is some way to get it to appear, I've yet to find it. I'll bet programmer Osamu Tani is behind it (and probably the happy face, too). He did some weird things like hide guitars that only become visible in the ending sequence if you end the game with dead party members. There's even a punk rocker face that might appear in the ending during his credit scene, but I've yet to figure out how to get it to appear, if it doesn't appear randomly.
I'm also unsure how a cat would fit in with the rest of Drakkhen. |

Well, a giant severed dog's head is pretty weird, but that's the thing - there's a lot of weird stuff in Drakkhen. Other enemies include a giant Henri Matisse's Icarus that pulls itself up out of the ground, a giant vector-line man in a swamp, and constellations that come to life in the form of giant birds and flying skulls. A cat seems too mundane to fit in. If it was supposed to be an enemy, it's the only one that's always loaded into memory. Maybe it could have also been a test object during development. Hm.... |

Ahem. I'll just leave this here and rest my case. ____________________ |
