This chapter introduces the concepts and fundamental knowledge of projects and project management (PM). The rich history of PM across different industries is reviewed to reveal the essential progress made. The importance of PM and the challenges that PM faces in contemporary times are discussed. The main generic standards, frameworks, and methodologies that are available in the PM world are reviewed, with case studies explored for exemplification of their application in real life. In the end, the current, emerging, and future trends of the knowledge and practice of PM are discussed as a reference point for the PM community.
