Is conda limited to Python? And what is the advantage over installing from CRAN/r-universe?

Such a common misconception! You are not alone. It doesn't help that the RStudio company won't get on board.

Conda started as an alternative to pip. Now it is a full-fledged package manager for any software whatsoever. Honestly, in the professional world, almost everyone is using it. It's especially useful for people who use packages in multiple languages such as bioinformatics. You can conda install <python tool> <r tool> <written in java> <written in c> ....... -y.

Another fact about conda is that it manages your pip installs as well.

I strongly encourage you to learn about it.

Edit

Actually, I shouldn't say that RStudio isn't on board at all. They are implementing python support out of the box moving forward, and there is R reticulate which works with conda

I'm still curious about

And what is the advantage over installing from CRAN/r-universe?
