From Proto-Indo-European *dʰwor-, o-grade of *dʰwer- (door, gate). Cognates include Old Church Slavonic двьри (dvĭri), Latin foris, Sanskrit द्वार् (dvā́r), Ancient Greek θύρα (thúra) and Old English duru and dor (English door).
