• Traditionally derived from Proto-Indo-European *dʰónu (“fir”), but with phonetic problems. Compare Ancient Greek θάμνος (thámnos, “thicket”), Hittite 𒄑𒋫𒈾𒀀𒌑 (^GIŠta-na-a-ú /⁠tanau⁠/, “fir”), German Tann (“woods”), Tanne (“fir”), Breton tann (“red oak”).
• Alternatively from Proto-Albanian *tsàna, from earlier Mediterranean substrate word *ḱastnà. Compare Ancient Greek κᾰ́στᾰνᾰ (kástana, “chestnut”) and Old Armenian կասկ (kask).
• Another suggested derivation is from a hypothetical Proto-Albanian *tsarnā, a *-ne- / *-no- augmented theme of Proto-Indo-European *ḱerh₂- (“horn”).^[1]
