editFrom Middle High German söugen, from Old High German sougen, from Proto-West Germanic *saugijan, from Proto-Germanic *saugijaną (“to cause to suck, nourish”), causative of Proto-Germanic *sūganą (“to suck”). Cognate with Old Saxon sōgian (“to suckle”), modern German Low German sögen (“to suckle”). Related to German saugen (“to suck”).
