running shed (plural running sheds)

1. (rail transport) A building used for the maintenance and preparation for service of locomotives.

     The running sheds consist of four round-houses, and still bear traces of the notorious "Baedeker" raid on the City of York itself.

     A correspondent points out that the new diesel depot at March is being fashioned by conversion of the former steam and repair depot; two roads in the running shed have now been adapted for such steam locomotive repair work as remains.
