Etymology

edit

First attested 1563. From Middle Dutch *regenworm, from Old Dutch *reganwurm, from Proto-West Germanic *regnawurmi (see there for cognates). By surface analysis, regen (rain) +‎ worm (worm), so called because of the animal's habit of surfacing after rainfall.
