editEtymology
editThere are two interpretations by two different sources:
- From the same unattested stem as in pirít + -os (adjective-forming suffix).[1]
- From pír (“blush”).[2]
Pronunciation
editAdjective
editpiros (comparative pirosabb, superlative legpirosabb)
Usage notes
edit"In Hungarian, piros […is] associated with blood inside the body, […] whereas vörös is associated with blood spilled […and] the fact that after a while, blood spilled tends to get darker could explain the inclusion of darker shades in vörös."[2] Common collocations include piros lap (red card in football), piros rózsa (red rose) and piros tojás (red egg, given by a girl to a boy during Easter).[2]
